APU Starting GPU | High‑Surge 400Hz Ground Power for Auxiliary Power Unit Starts
Starting an APU is hard on a ground power unit. The inrush current spikes to 2‑2.5x the normal rating for a solid 20‑30 seconds. A lot of GPUs can't handle that. They trip, or they sag, and the APU starter complains. The APU Starting GPU was built for exactly this job. It's a 90kVA unit on paper, but we over‑rated the IGBTs and transformer so it can deliver 250% for 30 seconds without breaking a sweat. That's enough for the biggest APUs on 737s, A320s, 777s, and even some 787s.If your main use case is APU starts – not just running avionics – this is the one you want.

APU Starting GPU Main Features
- Reinforced IGBT module – We use a larger die than the standard 90kVA. More silicon, less heat.
- Custom output transformer – Lower impedance than off‑the‑shelf parts. Handles the inrush without saturating.
- Current limit off – No foldback during overload. You get full current until the thermal limit, which is set high.
- Thermal headroom – Rated for 250% at 40°C ambient. We don’t derate you in a hot hangar.

Why Choose ACSOON APU Starting GPU?
Serious overload – 250% for 30 seconds. That’s not a typo. We tested it to 300% for 20 seconds and it still held.
No voltage sag – Even at 2.5x load, output stays within MIL‑STD‑704 limits. Your APU won’t drop out.
Fast recovery – When the APU generator comes online, the GPU backs off without overshoot or oscillation.
Same size as standard 90kVA – You don’t need a bigger cabinet. It fits the same footprint.
APU Starting GPU Application Areas
Airlines with high APU usage – Frequent engine starts, quick turns, hot climates where APU runs the whole ground time.
MRO facilities – Testing APUs after overhaul requires repeated start cycles. This unit survives the abuse.
Military airlift – C‑17, C‑5, A400M. Their APUs draw hard, especially in cold weather starts.
Cargo operators – Loading at remote stands with no preconditioned air, APU runs constantly.

Our Services

Quality Control
Overload torture test – Every unit runs at 250% load for 30 seconds, then 150% for 2 minutes. We do this twice.
Thermal imaging – At 250% load, we check every power component. Nothing exceeds 110°C.
APU simulator test – We have a load bank that mimics APU inrush profile. Each unit must pass 10 consecutive starts.
Final sign‑off – The test engineer initials a checklist. No digital pass‑through.
R&D Results
Learned from field returns – Customers kept blowing fuses on standard 90kVA units during APU starts. We upped the trip point and beefed up the rectifier.
Transformer redesign – Switched from aluminum to copper windings. Heavier, but handles the surge without heating up.
Added soft start on input – When the GPU first connects to the grid, it ramps up slowly. Stops the hangar lights from flickering.
Simplified the control logic – Removed the current foldback feature. If the APU wants 250%, it gets 250% until the thermal switch trips (which takes over a minute).

Packaging and Transportation
Standard GPU packaging – Bolted to a skid, stretch‑wrapped, strapped. Fits in a 20ft container.
Cable reel optional – If you need one, it ships separately.
Manual – Printed quick guide laminated. Full manual on USB.
Export crate – Optional wood crate for sea freight.
After‑Sales Service
2‑year warranty on the entire unit, including the overload rating.
1‑year on the cable and plug.
Spare parts stocked in Xi’an, Miami, and Singapore.
Email support – we have a tech who used to be an APU mechanic.

Qualification Certification
CE – LVD and EMC; MIL‑STD‑704F – Test report from a third‑party lab; ISO 9001:2015 – Our Xi’an facility; IP54 – SGS certified.

FAQ |
---
Q: Why can’t I just use a standard 90kVA GPU for APU starts?
A: You can, for a while. But standard GPUs are designed for 150% overload for 60 seconds. APU start surges can hit 250% and last 20‑30 seconds. That’s outside the spec. You’ll get nuisance trips, and eventually you’ll blow IGBTs. This unit is built for that abuse.
Q: What’s the maximum starting current?
A: At 115V, 250% of 90kVA is about 225kVA – roughly 650A per phase. That’s enough for any APU we’ve seen. If you need more, we have a 120kVA version with the same 250% rating.
Q: Can I use this as a normal GPU for avionics?
A: Yes. When it’s not starting an APU, it behaves exactly like our standard 90kVA unit. Same power quality, same features. You’re not giving anything up.
Q: Does it cost more than a standard 90kVA GPU?
A: About 15% more. The beefier IGBTs and transformer cost real money. But if you’re killing standard units every couple of years, the payback is less than 12 months.
Q: What’s the lead time?
A: 6‑8 weeks. We build these to order because the overload rating requires hand‑matching of components.
